چکیده

Abstract The scientific literature on climate change adaptation has become too large to assess manually. Beyond standard scientometrics, questions about if and how the field is progressing thus remain largely unanswered. Here we provide a novel, inquisitive, computer-assisted evidence mapping methodology that combines expert interviews ( n = 26) structural topic modelling evaluate open-ended research progress in field. We apply this 62 191 adaptation-relevant publications (1988–2020), selected through supervised machine learning from comprehensive query. Comparing key benchmarks of mature research, our findings align with trends observed by most experts: maturing, growing rapidly, diversifying, social science implementation topics arising next still-dominant natural sciences impacts-focused research. Formally assessing representativeness IPCC citations, find delay effect for fast-growing areas like strategies governance. Similarly, show significant biases geographic location: especially disaster development-related are often studied Southern countries authors North, while Northern dominate governance topics. Moreover, there general paucity some highly vulnerable countries. Experts lastly signal need meaningful stakeholder involvement. Expanding methods presented here would aid transparent monitoring For synthesis community, provides an example move beyond descriptive towards inquisitive formally evaluating questions.

Adaptation to Climate Change

We investigate the effect of climate change on population growth in 18th and 19th century Iceland. We find that annual temperature changes help determine the population growth rate in preindustrial Iceland: a year 1◦C cooler than average drives down population growth rates by 0.57% in each of the next two years, for a total effect of 1.14%. We also find that 18th and 19th century Icelanders ada...

Financing climate change adaptation.

This paper examines the topic of financing adaptation in future climate change policies. A major question is whether adaptation in developing countries should be financed under the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or whether funding should come from other sources. We present an overview of financial resources and propose the employment of a two-track approach...

Adaptation and Climate Change

This paper deals with the often ignored issue of adaptation to human-induced climate change. Adaptation is not only inevitable but essential to fashioning the least-social-cost strategy to addressing climate change. The urgency for limiting climate change is inversely proportional to society's adaptability. Some limitation strategies are incompatible with adaptation goals (e.g., reducing CO2 ra...

Managing Climate Change Refugia for Climate Adaptation

Refugia have long been studied from paleontological and biogeographical perspectives to understand how populations persisted during past periods of unfavorable climate. Recently, researchers have applied the idea to contemporary landscapes to identify climate change refugia, here defined as areas relatively buffered from contemporary climate change over time that enable persistence of valued ph...
